The High Court has unanimously rejected an appeal by Qantas after the federal court found the airline had illegally sacked staff in 2020 during the COVID pandemic.
Following the decision, lawyers say the company could be ordered to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in penalties and compensation to the workers. Rhiana Whitson has the story.

Anyone else who knowingly committed an illegal act at work would be fired. But if you're CEO, you get a $25m bonus. We need to legislate against this.
12 дней назадMr Dobalina +69
The new Qantas CEO, Venessa Hudson, was the CFO at the time all this went down… She should be held accountable along side that grub Joyce.
12 дней назадTim Lewis +67
Get jobkeeper and don't keep the jobs? Disgraceful behavior.
12 дней назадMicks A +6
I remember the days when QANTAS was a brand we as aussies were proud of. You felt a sense of love towards the brand, especially when you were overseas and you saw the iconic red tail. It’s been hijacked by corporate thugs and used for their pathetic, selfish benefits with zero consequences. Absolutely disgraceful.
11 дней назадsazisazi +53
This is basically how a MONOPOLY business behave. Australia needs a strong 2nd carrier.
12 дней назадRipty Urass +2
Well, government keeps siding with Qantas with everything competition wise anyway. Virgin got absolutely socked by AU govt in basically every dispute with Qantas. Australia deserves the monopoly it has because the government is so protective of Qantas.

Restart Ansett, East West, Compass. IMO
12 дней назадPhillip +12
The only regret Qantas feels is that they won't be able to pull this crap with their work force again.
12 дней назадBernard Szeto +27
Make Alan Joyce personally pay this fine with his own net worth! Reinstate the back pay plus interest, as well as their jobs!
12 дней назадMaige presents
Umm... yeah... never gonna happen...

So does the chairman to
12 дней назадBob Loblaw +9
There was a mistake in the Qantas announcement. They meant to say they are sorry the high court made the decision they did, not that they are sorry about their conduct. After all, qantas have fought and appealed this tooth and nail all the way to the highest court in the country. Hardly the behaviour of someone who regrets their actions. Most normal people and companies dont need the high Court to proxy as their moral compass. Joyce needs to hand back his board approved resignation $25m powerball win. The chairman and the board need to resign. Senior management need to be fired and the CEO chair needs fresh, new blood, from outside the tone deaf qantas executive echo chamber. Preferably an Australian and a pilot, who understands the heritage and place qantas once held in the hearts and minds of Australians
12 дней назадPeter McCulloch +7
And Qantas are so happy with the way the bussiness was run, they rewarded the CEO with a ten million dollar bonus.Joyce is responsible for seriously damaging the reputation of the company.
12 дней назадAB- +14
Good decision and very clearly and very obviously the correct one.
12 дней назадJohn D McLennan +7
The new CEO ( She oversaw this disgusting move ) and the Board needs to be sacked NOW and a new decent Australian with morals needs to take the lead to bring back Qantas. The little leprechaun needs to have any bonus or payout removed ! The happiness of staff on his early exit says it all.
12 дней назадElectro_Sykes +2
he was running the company like a low cost carrier without the low fares
12 дней назадStephen Dutton +2
Qantas broke the employment IR rules when they sacked these company baggage handlers and caused these employees great harm and financial losses and damages and emotional distress. They all need to band together and bring a class action for damages and compensation for forfeiture of their employment and for the emotional distress and harm caused to each of these employees. The financial hardship and loss of a living wage plunged these workers into poverty. They should be compensated and given back their jobs at higher wages. The sun contractors are only casual workers and could easily be fired.
12 дней назадIceman +2
I'm just glad nobody will be held accountable. Imagine if they were.

So prior to Covid I could travel on a return flight to London for $1,300 but today I struggle to get one for $2,600 whilst Qantas blocks other airlines flying to Australia and records record profits?
11 дней назадrainey06au +22
Sucked in. Time to chase up all the employers that followed this route.
12 дней назадDavid Aboud
As an Aussie living in Asia it defies understanding why Australia still tries to run an international airline. It's stuck at the end of all routes, can never be a hub. The country is over regulated and a business hostile environment. Just punt the whole thing into touch and use Singapore, Emirates and Qatar or Thai. Any number of better options.
10 дней назадBrett R +39
Goyder and the entire qantas board should be sacked
12 дней назадBuster McFlea +1
QANTAS & Jetstar lost me immediately pre Covid for a return fare from Bali of $1250 economy compared to the cancelled Jetstar fare of $350. These workers have been dudded meanwhile their former boss was the first to have his hand out for taxpayer subsidies, sold 8000 seats that didn’t exist & walks away with tens of millions. It’s a disreputable company that price gouged & engages in dodgy practices.
12 дней назадKrosanBeast315 +3
Serves them right! What they did was unethical
12 дней назадDodgy Goose +6
Crazy as soon as a great public owned service gets privatised, say goodby to good service & tax revenue.
12 дней назадElectro_Sykes +1
Such as shame. I have shares in Qantas and I am very annoyed of how slowly overtime, it got worse and worse. Whatever happened to the friendly Australian World Class 5 star service in Qantas.
12 дней назадBuster McFlea
It was Privatised. Ironic eh!

When are Australian companies going to realise that this American idea of outsourcing doesn’t work . Companies don’t have the loyalty of employees who are outsourced. Look at these companies who out sourced their call centres …. Their customer service suffered. We give bonuses to easily to likes of Alan Joyce when the guys on the frontline work twice as hard to get a pitiful bonus. Joyce still got his bonus no matter if the company performed or not.
12 дней назадGary Pezet +1
Is customer service actually a concern in Australia anymore?
12 дней назадReinhard_P +1
Those bonusses are based solely on profits, staff and customers are literally redundant
12 дней назадAli Shah +21
Legacy of Joyce (in my opinion).
12 дней назадDodgy Goose +1
Don't forget that Qantas was a government owned service where it got its good name and then was privatised ....
12 дней назадJake Ryan +1
Not just your opinion
12 дней назадJohn L
And now for the class-action lawsuit that'll gut them for millions upon millions. If you're a share-holder I'd get out now.
11 дней назадElaine Fairhead +1
That employee hit the nail on the head. He did it for his own financial gain. Alan Joyce destroyed our wonderful airline he should pay ALL reparations and forfeit all bonuses. Then deport him.
12 дней назадBuster McFlea
It’s not ours. It was sold off decades ago
12 дней назадBobby Boy
I think Joyce is an Australian citizen, but great idea if he isn't. Grub should end up in gaol
12 дней назадMaige presents +2
Should've sacked the management if they wanted to save money...
12 дней назадbullant74
We deeply regret the personal impact the outsourcing decision had on all those affected and we sincerely apologize for that. Yep lol sure you do quantas. That's why you appealed the courts decision . umm......twice . The flying Kangaroo is no longer that awsome Aussie icon we all new. Thank you Joyce and dont forget the all agreeing Quantas Board for destroying our awesome airline. Dont worry Joyce you are going down in history as the man that destroyed Quantas.
11 дней назадCelesteofOz +4
And Quanta’s you can threaten to “pass the costs on to customers” all you like. I won’t be one of your customers.
12 дней назадSKS
COVID and now the expectation of a recession has motivated so many companies to shed employees. Which...really means less customers spending less. That's a sure fire way to have a recession and decreased revenues 😅

I worked for Swissport too, I have nothing good to say about my experience there.
12 дней назадWhale Oil Beef Hooked +1
I don’t know how most people feel about Allan Joyce but honestly I really do feel sick just looking at his head. No one deserves to be paid $170,000 a week at the expense of wrongfully sacked workers. He should do time for it in my eyes.
12 дней назадTraveller +27
I hope they sue qantas big time. 1700 x $280000 means half a billion at least 😂😂😂😂😂 suck eggs. Allan joyce the grub got out having ruined qantas reputation. Its ruined.
12 дней назадSquishy Mon +1
During events like the pandemic all corporations should be mandated to say to all shareholders f.off you want an investment after this no dividend until 2025 as no employees no dividends by the government like woolworths and their greed over farmers government needs to mandate in events like the pandemic no share dividend to ever be paid as employees are the blood and life of the company 😊
12 дней назадJan Radoszko
Well done guys. Now Qantas should also pay penalty for selling canceled flights, no matter who the CEO it is.

It's really sad how shittily run the airline has been in the last few years. Used to be a huge fan. I have little hope with the same execs still running the place.

Strip Alan Joyce bonus for compensation. He made this mess, after that, sack outsourcing and get these people back.

I bet Joyce and his buddies got a nice little sweetener for his latest 787 order too
12 дней назадGary
Sorry only because they got caught...
12 дней назадHappy Fox!
this is why we need rail alternatives... Raise the prices of tickets beyond the bargain bin prices... pay workers fairly, will it have less people wanting to fly? yes, but having expensive airbuses fly at the exorbant prices to others so that you can get from Melbourne to Sydney for $79 is just way too cheap.. take a bus or a train, make the train faster and cheaper... This is just disgusting, and people that are rich believe "it's the way of life, unions are getting in the way" well, true, but are you sure you want to have the new slave labour but instead of ownership that's the problem, it's the promise of "we will settle your debts... for a contract with us for 5 years" but then turn around and have terms that are wildly unreasonable.

12 дней назадcing earth cingearth
The flying rat still won by not having to reinstate there jobs! And jetstar has taken over many Qantas routes so you argue that qantas outsourced to cheaper jetstar flight crew cabin crew flight destinations ! So qantas still won by default
