It's because of a meteorological phenomenon called an inversion, which traps cool, dense air - with smoke mixed in with it - close to ground level. This is how it works. Subscribe: ab.co/3yqPOZ5 Read more here: www.abc.net.au/news/2023-09-1...
Sydney is the most recent city to be covered in an eerie smoke haze, a familiar sight to Australians during autumn and spring as fire crews make hazard reduction burns ahead of summer.
Air quality has hit very poor ratings across several Sydney monitoring districts since Monday, according to data from the NSW government, especially during the morning and evening periods.
Alexandria, in Sydney's east, on Monday had a fine particle pollution measurement of PM2.5 - worse than Beijing's 2022 average.
The grey skyline is a familiar sight across Australia during autumn and spring, as fire crews make hazard reduction burns ahead of summer.
So what causes it to become trapped, and how much more burning is due?

It is strange that the reason given for not doing controlled burns earlier in winter was that the bush was damp. It hasn't rained much at all since April. In my opinion, the RFS has caused massive pollution for many days due to lighting too many hazard reduction burns all around Sydney in a single week. This is not a small inconvenience but a life threatening problem for those with respiratory conditions.

Far better the alternative of having massive bushfires that turn the sky dark orange and grey.
